Does my computer meet the technical requirements?

Blackboard will be used for communication, collaboration, resources, etc. To eliminate technical difficulties with using Blackboard, you should make sure you use a web browser that is compatible with this version of Blackboard. Refer to this list of acceptable browsers (link will open in a new window). You can test your browser by using the Browser Test link below.

Mobile devices: You can use the Blackboard Mobile Learn app to access Blackboard. This course was designed to be mobile friendly, however, you will find that some of content has to be accessed using a computer.

Additional browser plug-ins are required in order for you to see certain content in this course. Please make sure you have Java installed. The Adobe Flash Player should also be installed. Use the links below to install java, quicktime, and flash player on your computer. The links will open in a new window.

I don't really know much about using Blackboard--can I get some help? Absolutely! We have prepared a number of how-to documents for students and you can also contact Xavier's ITC Help Desk for assistance.

The ITC Help Desk @ 520-7446 is now offering extended hours as follows:

Monday through Thursday - 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Saturday - 12 noon to 6:00 p.m.

Sunday - 1:00 to 10:00 p.m.

What courses are being offered?
--The online and hybrid course offerings change each semester. Please check the Registrar's dynamic schedule. This schedule must be viewed with Internet Explorer or Safari.

Okay, I'm ready to take an online class, so what is my next step?
--Current Xavier Students may register for online and hybrid courses as you do for face to face ones.

--Transient (Visiting, Non-Degree) Students may begin the process by completing the Admissions application. Here is the pdf version for you to print and fax.
For expedited processing, you may fax your transient application plus signed Letter of Good Standing or
transcripts to the attention of Bryan Carraway in Admissions: 504-520-7941.
Transient students taking only online courses and will not be coming to campus, are eligible for a waiver from
Student Health services to present immunization records. Please contact Ms. Avis Stuard in the Registrar's Office to assist you. The number is: 504-520-6790.

  1. What is XULA Online? XULA Online is Xavier’s distance education initiative and includes online and hybrid courses.
  2. Who can take courses through XULA Online? Current Xavier students as well as non-Xavier students can take XULA Online courses as long as any prerequisites have been met. Non-Xavier students will be classified as transient.
  3. What are the technology requirements? Basic technology requirements are a computer, either pc or mac that’s capable of running Xavier’s current version of Blackboard. In addition, you should have access to a webcam and microphone. Technology requirements may vary slightly by course so be sure to check with the course instructor.
  4. What software, apps do I need to take a course? XULA Online courses are in Blackboard. In addition to Blackboard, java must be up to date. Again, there may be additional requirements specified by the course instructor so it’s a good idea to check.
  5. What is the difference between online and hybrid courses? For Xavier, a course designated as “online” is 100% online. A course that requires any established meeting time on campus for class or to take tests, is considered a hybrid course. Hybrid courses vary in the amount of on-campus time required so be sure to check the course descriptions.
  6. Who teaches the XULA Online courses? Highly-qualified Xavier faculty design and teach XULA Online courses!
  7. What courses are offered next semester? Please check the Registar’s page for the current class schedule. Use Internet Explorer or Safari to view it.
  8. How do I take the tests for the courses? For online courses, you will also take your tests online. Your instructor will provide you with more information on how the online tests are set up as well as any special requirements. For hybrid courses, you will probably have a combination of online and in class testing. Again, please check with the course instructor.
  9. Is there an extra fee for XULA Online courses? At present, there is no extra fee to take an online or hybrid course.
  10. Are XULA Online courses accessible? The Xavier faculty who have designed these courses have made every effort to accommodate a variety of student needs. However, if you are concerned about the accessibility features of a particular course, please contact the instructor for additional information.
